How to Install n8n on Your Computer for Practice

You do not need a server to learn n8n. You can run it on your own computer. Here are the two common routes.

Option 1: Docker (recommended)

Docker keeps n8n separate from the rest of your system. Install Docker Desktop, then follow the current command from n8n’s documentation. It usually looks like this:

Create a Docker volume so your data survives restarts.
Run the n8n image, mapping port 5678 and attaching the volume.
Open a browser at localhost on port 5678 and create your owner account.

The exact command can change, so copy it from n8n’s official docs rather than from a blog.

Option 2: npm

If you already use Node.js, n8n documents a way to run it through npm. It is quick, but you must manage Node versions yourself.

Important: keep your data

If you run n8n without a volume or data folder, you lose workflows when the container is removed. Always mount persistent storage.

Webhooks on your own computer
